Sizing — Indian standard

Last updated · 25 May 2026

Indian jewellery sits differently to Western pieces. A choker hugs the base of the throat; a haar drops over a blouse; a maang tikka follows the hair parting from crown to forehead. Get the length right and the piece falls into place. Get it wrong and it fights you all evening.

You will need a soft measuring tape (the cloth kind tailors use) or a piece of string and a ruler. Measure over the skin or over a thin blouse — not over a heavy lehenga choli.

Chokers — 12 to 16 inches

Wrap the tape around the base of your neck, where a high-collar blouse would sit, and add half an inch for clasp clearance. Indian choker sizes:

  • 12-13" — petite, sits high on the throat.
  • 14" — the most-ordered size at Nandai. Sits at the base of the throat, just above the collarbone.
  • 15-16" — looser, sits on the collarbone itself, leaves room for a layered look.

If you are in between, size up — Nandai chokers come with an extender chain that adjusts down by up to two inches.

Necklaces and haars — 16 to 22 inches

  • 16-17" — princess length. Sits just below the collarbone.
  • 18" — the bridal-haar default. Falls to the top of the bust.
  • 20-22" — long haar. Sits at the bust line, layers under a choker for a classical two-tier bridal look.

Earring drop length

Measured from the ear hole down. Indian conventions:

  • Stud / chand bali (1-1.5") — sits at the earlobe. Daywear, office, light occasions.
  • Jhumka (1.5-2.5") — drops just below the earlobe. The festive default.
  • Bridal jhumki (2.5-3.5") — drops to the jawline. Pair with a high updo so the silhouette reads cleanly.

Maang tikka length

Measure from your crown (where the hair parts at the top) down to where you want the pendant to rest on the forehead. Indian-standard maang tikka chains:

  • 7-8" — pendant rests at the upper forehead, common for everyday festive wear.
  • 9-10" — pendant rests between the brows, the classical bridal placement.
  • Borla style — non-adjustable bell pendant; sits where the chain anchors. Choose by photograph rather than by measurement.

Bangles

Nandai bangles are sized in the standard Indian numbering — 2.4, 2.6, 2.8 inches across (the inside diameter of the bangle, not the wrist circumference). To find your size, slip a known-good bangle over your hand and measure across it with a ruler. If you have never owned a bangle, measure the widest part of your hand (knuckles tucked, thumb across the palm) and match to: hand width 7.5 cm → size 2.6, 8 cm → 2.8, 8.5 cm → 2.10.
