Shipping Indian jewellery to Toronto: customs, ETAs, returns.

A practical question we get from every diaspora customer, and one most catalogues handle badly: what actually happens when an Indian-jewellery order ships internationally? The answer varies by country and by shipper, but the rough shape of the journey is the same. A short, honest walk-through for the Toronto, New York, London, and Sydney customer, with the customs and timing realities named directly.

Stage one: dispatch from India. Our warehouse is in Jaipur with a secondary dispatch point in Mumbai. International orders ship by FedEx or DHL international priority, which takes a piece through Indian customs export clearance (typically same-day for our consignment category, occasionally one-day delay during festival season) and onto an international flight. Total dispatch-to-air-cargo time: one to two business days. The tracking number activates the same day the piece leaves our warehouse.

Stage two: international transit. The flight from India to a North American destination is roughly twenty hours of actual flying. The piece spends additional time at hub airports (Dubai, Frankfurt, or Hong Kong depending on the route). Total transit time air-cargo to destination-country customs: two to three days. The tracking number updates with a customs-arrival timestamp once the piece lands at the destination country's customs facility.

Stage three: destination-country customs. This is where the variance lives. Fashion-jewellery declared at our standard order value (typically USD 50-250 for a Nandai piece) is in the category that clears destination customs without manual inspection in the majority of cases. Canada: typically three to five business days, occasionally up to seven during high-volume periods. United States: typically four to seven business days, with extended timelines around the November-December holiday season. United Kingdom: typically two to four business days, the fastest of the four. Australia: typically five to eight business days, the slowest due to Australia's stricter biosecurity import regime.

Stage four: domestic last-mile. Once customs clears the piece, the local courier (FedEx, DHL, or sometimes a handoff to Canada Post / USPS / Royal Mail / Australia Post depending on the service tier) delivers to the customer's address. Typical last-mile time: one to three business days. Signature is required on delivery for fashion-jewellery orders above a certain declared value (varies by country), so the customer must be home or arrange a pickup at the local depot.

Total end-to-end timing summary. India-to-Toronto: typically 7 to 12 calendar days, with a comfortable buffer of 14 days for any order shipping to Canada. India-to-New York: 9 to 14 calendar days, buffer 16. India-to-London: 6 to 10 calendar days, buffer 12. India-to-Sydney: 10 to 16 calendar days, buffer 18. We quote the buffer timing on every diaspora order, not the typical timing, because the cost of a piece arriving after a wedding event is much higher than the cost of a piece arriving a few days early.

On customs duties. Almost every developed country applies an import duty plus a sales tax (GST, VAT, HST) on jewellery imports above a small de-minimis threshold. The threshold varies: Canada's de-minimis is CAD 20 for courier shipments, the US is USD 800, the UK is GBP 135 for VAT (with duty applicable above that), Australia is AUD 1000. For most of our orders to Canada and the UK, duties and taxes apply; for most of our orders to the US, they do not (the de-minimis is high enough). We do not pre-pay these on the customer's behalf — they are billed by the courier to the recipient on delivery. We declare the actual order value on every shipment; under-declaration is illegal and the customs hold cost when caught is higher than the duty savings.

On returns. We accept returns from all four destination countries within 14 days of delivery, customer pays return shipping, full refund of the piece value minus the original outbound shipping cost. The piece must arrive at our warehouse in original condition with the original packaging. Return shipping from North America to India typically costs USD 35-60 per package via FedEx or DHL economy. Returns from the UK are roughly GBP 25-45. Returns from Australia are AUD 50-80. These are real costs and we do not absorb them; the best way to avoid them is to confirm fit and finish from photographs before ordering, and we will send additional photographs under different lighting on request before any wedding-week piece ships.
