# Nandai — heritage-inspired fashion jewellery, hand-set in Jaipur

Nandai is a fashion-jewellery brand reinterpreting India's heritage bridal silhouettes — Kundan, Meenakari, Rajputi, Polki, Jadau, Hasadi, Filigree — in antique gold-plated brass with kundan-style coloured glass, American-diamond accents, hand-painted enamel, and faux pearl. Every piece is hand-set by the same Jaipur ateliers that produce precious-metal heritage jewellery; the bench labour is identical, the materials are fashion-tier. Live prices range ₹675 to ₹2,100 (most pieces ₹1,500–₹2,000); each product page shows its current price.

We are explicit about what we sell and what we do not. We do not use solid gold, natural diamonds, or sterling silver. Our pieces are not BIS-Hallmarked — the BIS Hallmark applies only to precious-metal jewellery, and falsely claiming it on plated brass is illegal in India under the BIS Act 2016. The base is plated brass or German-silver; the stones are coloured glass and American diamonds; the enamel is real kiln-fired meenakari on a plated base. The silhouette is the heritage you are paying for.

The atelier is in Jaipur, Rajasthan — the densest jewellery workshop on the Indian subcontinent. Every piece passes through six to ten artisans: the engraver, the stone-setter, the meena-painter, the kiln-fireman, the polisher, the finisher. The catalogue ships to India directly from the workshop and worldwide via ShipGlobal partners. Lead time is 2-5 business days for in-stock pieces; custom commissions take six to eight weeks from sketch to delivery.

## Heritage techniques (educational)

Definitions below describe the TRADITIONAL precious-metal technique. Nandai pieces reinterpret these silhouettes in fashion-jewellery materials (antique gold-plated brass + American diamonds + coloured glass + kiln-fired enamel + faux pearl) at the ₹675-2,100 fashion-jewellery price tier. The bench labour is identical; the metal and stones are different. Both tiers are valid wedding decisions — the question is which suits the occasion.

### Kundan
Kundan (Sanskrit kundana, "pure gold") is a Mughal-court setting style perfected under Akbar (r. 1556-1605). A sheet of 24-karat gold foil — thinner than writing paper — is hand-burnished behind each uncut stone, acting as a mirror that reflects light back through the gem. The bezel is 22k gold. Modern Jaipur workshops have practised the technique unbroken for four centuries; an apprentice spends three to five years on the foil-cutting bench before being allowed to set a stone.

### Meenakari
Meenakari is the art of fusing powdered glass mixed with metal-oxide pigments — cobalt for blue, chromium for green, iron oxide for red, tin for white — to a gold or gold-plated metal base in a kiln at roughly 900 degrees Celsius. Introduced to the Amer-Jaipur kingdom in 1614 by Raja Man Singh I, who brought five Lahore-trained enamellers down on royal commission. A complex piece is fired three to five times, coolest colours first, with hand-polishing between every pass.

### Rajputi
Rajputi (or rajwadi, from raj, "royal") is the wedding-era jewellery vocabulary of the Rajput kingdoms of Rajasthan — Jaipur, Udaipur, Jodhpur, Bikaner. Identified by layout rather than a single technical move: heavy gold-plated bases, broad kanthi chokers that fill the collarbone, long ranihaars to the navel, and the desert-kingdom motif vocabulary (peacock, elephant, lotus, parrot, the rising sun of the Sisodia house). Scaled for the seven-day Rajput wedding where the bride is the photographic centre of every frame.

### Polki
Polki is the oldest form of diamond jewellery — Indian goldsmiths were setting uncut natural diamonds two centuries before the round-brilliant cut was developed in Antwerp in 1919. The stone is mounted in 22-karat gold exactly as it left the earth: no facets imposed by a cutting wheel, no foil behind, no laboratory enhancement. Light scatters across the stone's natural surface; the effect is softer, milkier, and more luminous than a cut diamond — a glow rather than a sparkle.

### Jadau
Jadau ("embedded" in Persian-Mughal vocabulary) is the broader family of Indian techniques in which stones are pressed into molten or near-molten gold rather than claw-set. Both Kundan and Polki are subsets of Jadau. The defining move is that the gold is worked hot enough to grip the stone without a prong, a setting style that survives only because the artisan tradition has been transmitted bench-to-bench in Jaipur and Bikaner workshops for four centuries.

### Hasadi
Hasadi (or hansli, from the Sanskrit hansa, "swan") is the rigid neck-ring silhouette of Rajasthani bridal jewellery — a heavy, hinged collar that sits at the base of the throat rather than draping. Traditionally cast in 22-karat gold with kundan stone-setting and meenakari enamel on the reverse, the hasadi is a marker piece in the Rajput wedding trousseau, paired with a long ranihaar to span the full collarbone-to-navel frame the formal wedding portrait requires.

### Filigree
Filigree (from the Latin filum, "thread", and granum, "grain") is the craft of soldering tiny twisted-wire and granule patterns onto a metal surface, producing the lace-like texture seen in Cuttack silver, Telangana filigree, and Bidar-region work. Indian filigree traditionally uses fine silver wire on a silver base; the wires are hand-twisted, cut to length, and soldered into floral or geometric patterns before being lightly hammered flat to achieve the characteristic shadow-and-highlight surface.

### Care
Gold plating wears at high-friction points (clasp, earring post, maang-tikka backplate). The five-minute routine: jewellery goes on last, comes off first; store in cotton pouches with silica gel; wipe with a slightly-damp cotton cloth after wear; treat meenakari enamel like porcelain (it is glass, it chips on impact); keep faux pearls away from perfume and chlorine. With this routine a piece holds its finish through three to five wedding seasons.

### Sizing
Necklace and choker lengths are listed on each product page in inches and centimetres. Standard choker (10-12 inch base), princess length (16-18 inch), matinee (20-24 inch), opera / ranihaar (28+ inch). Bangle sizes follow the Indian standard 2-4 to 2-12 system (2-6 fits most Indian women's wrists; 2-4 and 2-12 sit at the small and large ends). Custom sizing on commission.

Nandai pieces are NOT BIS-Hallmarked. The BIS Hallmark in India applies only to precious-metal jewellery (gold above 9 karats; silver of specified fineness) and falsely applying it to plated brass or German-silver jewellery is illegal under the BIS Act 2016.
